Sin City

Thursday, March 31st, 2005

I had the fortune of catching the regional premiere for Sin City and just… wow…

That is a cool movie! It’s very true to the nature of Frank Miller’s books. Very dark. I don’t mean dark like “noir” though certainly that term would apply. Anything based from Frank Miller’s works will be undoubtedly violent, dramatic and very somber. But it was more than that. It wasn’t till afterwards with the Q&A session with the director Robert Rodriguez that I understood why it was so dark. In the movie, they emulated Miller’s drawing style. Miller himself described his style in the phrase “When in doubt, black it out.” And that is how his works look, black and white, with very little color, and even less gray tone. The movie is the same dark, black and white, hard-edged style.

The characters are tough. The setting is tough. The plot is tough. Everything and everyone is hard-nosed. Yet you can’t help develop a kindred spirit towards characters like “Marv”. Marv, the hard ass who could kill at will, but only for a purpose. That purpose is vindication of the woman who stole his heart and was murdered under his nose. Then there is Elijah Wood’s character. I never thought he would be capable of playing a character that gave me the willies, but he did just that. Very creepy.

For anyone who likes a dark violent film that is unlike anything you have ever seen before, I highly recommend you give it a gander.

Finally!

Wednesday, March 30th, 2005

We won! We fucking won! Finally! Yes, that’s right, the softball version of the bad news bears finally won a game. We played all last year (4 seasons) without a win. While I am not going to go count the number of games, that’s something along the lines of 30 games. 30 losses, and while we saw a measured a level of improvement between them, last night was vindication. We had been close the last couple of games, losing by narrow margins and playing close games. Don’t get me wrong, we won 9-8 in extra innings (where we had to play 1-pitch). It was no blow out, but a W is a W.

What makes this extra sweet is that this team was undefeated (beating both of the teams we had lost to in the previous weeks) and apparently were undefeated for several seasons. One of the guys on our team recogized them as the winners of a local tournement (Motorola). These guys were good. But on this one day, we were better.

How did I do individually? Miserable. I went 0-2 (1 walk). However, for the record, I was robbed of 1. We were in the last inning (before going to extra innings) and 1 out with a runner on first. I get up to bat, take a ball and a strike and then made good contact. The ball flew deep over the right center fielders head, but it had too much air under it. The fielder turns around and catches it on the run over his shoulder at the fence. He made one hell of a catch, cause that hit should have pushed our runner home. Damn him!

March Madness Yang

Monday, March 28th, 2005

So March Madness is winding down, and in one of the leagues I’m in I’m tied for the lead with Wanda’s BF. It’s all about UNC and Ill. Well, I had to sign on the boards to talk some yang to the other people in the group, and I thought I would share, as it’s some of my better work. Problem is, it’s out of context. So I will try to explain it as best as possible.

so… uh… huh? who woulda guessed… Wanda’s BF and I in the final. Better luck next year hatas:

Wanda - so close, yet so far. It must hurt to know that even if you feel vindicated by beating me, your BF will still beat you and therefore doesn’t love you.

Jalapeno has been telling me that UNC is gonna lose for like 3 rounds now… they are still in it.

Jalapeno - “UNC is going down”… yeah, about that… Don’t ever, ever question me, sucka!

Vermont is a low seed that wasn’t really expected to do much. Ponch did a good job of guessing them to do at least reasonably well. However, short of that, his and my brackets are very, very similar, and if I win, he will get 2nd.

Ponch - While I applaud you for taking Vermont to the sweet 16, and actually being correct that they would at least upset their first game, riding on my coattails will still only get you 2nd at best. Remember that.

Jalapeno’s Wife took Southern Illinois very far in the brackets, yet experts expected them to do nothing. And they did nothing. She still beat her husband.

Jalapeno’s Wife – valiant effort rook… So. Ill? Were you sober? I’d say let your man help you like Wanda did, but you beat him. Take consolation in the fact you lead for the longest time, and you are still techincally tied. In theory, you could tie for the win.

Catholic Boy is well.. catholic. That and he feels that eBay has a moral obligation to not allow people to sell things for more than they are worth.

Catholic Boy - Better start praying. Short of a devine intervention involving the pope and bad math, yer out! Maybe eBay will run the brackets next year and police them to make sure no one selects a team for more than they are worth.

Random Geek - I WTFPWN3D J00, N00B! I think next year we’ll start a geeks league for you and your ilk.

and though not a hata, can’t leave him out:

Wanda’s BF - Can UNC handle the 3 man backcourt of Ill? Can Ill keep up with UNC’s scoring from every position? What happens if we are both wrong and Ill nor UNC goes on?

back up again
