Europe, Thy Name Is Cowardice

Thursday, February 3rd, 2005

I don’t normally touch politically charged stuff. Mostly because I consider myself relatively ignorant on the subjects therefore I don’t have the ammunition to back up what I argue about. However, occassionally something moves me enough that I feel it worthy of sharing.

While reading one of my message boards, I came across a link to an article that was so well written, so succinct and scathing that it needed to be shared. The article lambasts Europe’s leaders for basically being cowards. For being so complacent in their lifestyle that they aren’t willing to risk anything to stand up for what they feel is right.

This is all pretty standard fair down here in Texas. We make fun of the Euros, especially the French for being… well… less than courageous. However, this article was written by a very prominent German businessman. The CEO of Axel Springer (a large publishing company in Germany), Mathias Döpfner. Oof, now that’s a twist. A European media head calling the goverment cowards. Not only that, but praising American heads of state for having the resolution to stand up for what they feel is right. Even in the face of worldwide criticism. That’s a nice set he’s got, I’ll wager.

V-day Acknowledgement

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2005

Yes, I know v-day is upon us. It has been a tumultuous subject. I have found myself going back and forth about it. Then someone hit me with a revelation that brought my real issue with it to light. We were talking about plans for v-day a month or 2 back, and I was already getting aggrevated, when someone made the statement “why are you the one that has to plan it?”. I don’t know why, but I had never considered that before. To top it off, it was a female who said it.

So I relayed that to the little lady and she is on the chopping block for planning what we are doing this year. I have found myself actually looking forward to it.

I still can’t stand the idea of a day that force feeds us romance. If it doesn’t come naturally, it not really romance. Then again, I am looking forward to our plans, so I suppose I will have to bite my tongue on the subject, till next year anyways… ;)
