Whataburger styles

Well, I just got back into town from a great weekend trip in New Orleans. While I intend on regaling in great detail, for now, you’ll have to settle for something a bit shorter.

A recent acquaintance of mine runs a site where she reviews restaurants, tries out new recipes and has generally good food talk called Holy Shitake. I read her site all the time, cause I am, well, obsessed with food. Her delivery of interesting recipes brought some new ideas to my attention. Talking about not only my fanaticism for food in general but specifically some of the more quirky tastes I have.

I love Whataburger. I think it’s the best major chain fast food burger available to me in Austin. I’ve had a lot of fast food burgers (including, but not limited to In-n-Out, Sonic, Burger King, McD’s, DQ and Jack-n-the-Box), but none of the compare to Whataburger. The meat is good quality and well seasoned. The lettuce is crisp (I hate shredded lettuce). The tomatoes are ripe (this cannot be stressed enough, just cause the outside is red doesn’t mean the tomato is ripe). The onions are fresh, the japs are spicy. It’s served with mustard, not mayo. The bun is lightly toasted. I could go on…

However, at 11pm is when I really get my hankering for Whataburger. That’s when they start serving breakfast. I’m sure their pancakes are good, same with their buscuits but I get the same thing every time (which is against my nature).

2 Sausage BOBs (ranchero style), a Bacon, Egg & Cheese Taquito, 2 orders of hashbrown sticks and a large Dr. Pepper. I always ask for extra picante sauce, at least 4.

When I get home, I put 3 hashbrown strips on each BOB and 2 on the taquito. I put 1 picante on the BOB, 2 on the taquito. It seems like a lot of work, but trust me, it’s worth it. The cruch of the fried potato in contrast of the softness of the egg and the stout flavor of the sausage and bacon is nothing short of drunk food nirvana. I highly recommend it.
